Horizon and PLE have a new librarian this year, and students are excited to get to know her! We sat down with Mrs. Mattke to learn more about why she became a librarian, what books she loves, and what big plans she has for the Horizon Library. Here’s what she shared with us!
1. What made you want to become a librarian?
Before I earned my college degree in English, I always loved reading and writing. I also enjoy working with kids and helping them feel safe. I’m excited to help students discover the same passion for reading that I have.
2. What was your favorite book when you were our age?
When I was younger, I loved The Babysitters Club series. Back then, they were chapter books, not graphic novels! I also loved Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery and The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin.
3. What do you like most about our school library so far? I think 3rd–5th grade is such a fun time for reading, especially because there are so many great series to explore. I love helping students find books they're excited about and making sure they have access to lots of choices.
4. Are there any new books or ideas you’re excited to share with students?
I’m excited to teach biographies soon! We’ll read some picture book biographies and learn about people who lived extraordinary lives. I’m always ordering new books to keep the library fresh and exciting. Keep an eye out for more graphic novels, since I know many of you love them!
5. What are your goals for the library this year?
One goal is to make it easier to find books in the nonfiction section. I also want to help everyone find books they love. I want to show students lots of new books and ideas. I love reading and writing, and I want the library to feel like a safe and fun place for everyone.
6. How do you hope students will feel when they visit the library?
I hope students feel welcome, safe, and excited to be here. I want everyone to find a book they love, enjoy reading, and share recommendations with others.
