The third graders at Horizon have been busy! Their project, “Pick Your Petal,” started as a simple idea to care for the school garden and turned into a real flower business. We sat down with their teacher, Mrs. Knutson, to learn how this blooming idea came to life and what her students learned along the way.
1. How did you come up with this idea?
I’ve always loved flower gardening! When Mrs. O’Hern retired, I asked if my class could take care of her garden. We realized we needed new supplies, so we decided to start a flower business to raise money and make people happy.
2. Did you plan to sell and deliver the flowers at the start, or did that idea come later?
We always wanted to sell and deliver flowers, but we worked as a class to make a business name and plan. The students said delivering was their favorite part!
3. What steps did you take in the classroom to get your idea off the ground?
We started by naming the business “Pick Your Petal.” Then we made posters and order forms. When the orders came in, everyone was so excited.
4. Tell us about each step. What were the challenges, successes, and your favorite parts?
Planning: We learned about money and how to write cards and speeches.
Planting: Last year’s class planted the flowers with Mrs. O’Hern and Mrs. Smith’s 4th graders. We plan to do that every spring.
Harvesting: The more we picked, the more the flowers grew! We always had plenty for bouquets.
Delivery: Delivering was the best because everyone appreciated the flowers.

5. Will you do this project again? Why or why not?
Yes! We had so much fun and learned a lot. We hope to fix up the flower beds and maybe raise money or find donations this winter.
6. Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
Mrs. O’Hern does a ton of work behind the scenes, like planting, watering, and saving the tubers in winter. We also got to meet a real flower business owner who taught us cool new tips!
